Description

“Nigel Gore is the perfect narrator for H.G. Wells’s classic science fiction tale. The story-within-a-story structure requires Gore to be credible and earnest so that listeners will believe the tale’s unnamed narrator. There are few audiobook performers more earnest and credible than Gore. As the tale becomes more fantastic, his calm, cool delivery keeps listeners grounded. When the story turns into a dire warning about the way humanity will surely destroy the earth unless we make major changes, Gore does not sound like a scold but like a leader with our best interest in mind. This new production is perfect for longtime fans while being accessible to those lucky enough to discover this work for the first time.” —AudioFile

“I told you so, you damned fools.” —H G Wells

The father of Science Fiction predicted the events of the next century with almost 100% accuracy. In The Time Machine he depicted a dying world destroyed by humanity long before anyone realized climate change was becoming an urgent issue, making the famous story even more chillingly relevant today.
Inventing the now-familiar concept of time travel, Wells sends his English scientist 802,701 years into the future where he encounters our own earth, now dying by inches, populated by the sweet but feckless Eloi and threatened from below by the malevolent Morlocks.

Shakespearean actor Nigel Gore’s powerful narration of The Time Machine is followed by an exclusive interview with John Kress, Distinguished Scientist and Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian who talks with award-winning producer Alison Larkin about the alarming links between the future H G Wells imagined for humanity in 1895 and how climate change is affecting the world today.

About the Narrator:
Nigel Gore is a Shakespearean actor, known for his critically acclaimed portrayals of Richard III, Macbeth and Julius Caesar. He recently won the Eliot Norton Outstanding Actor award for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf and toured the world playing innumerable Shakespearean characters with Tina Packer in Women of Will.
